Absolute Chronology Bible History Timeline: established by God, presented by AJ Koehler

LEGEND
Blue: battles

Orange/Rust with white text: Astronomical/scientific anchors
Orange/Rust with black or red text: Historical or Biblical anchors or Synchronisms
Tan: people or reigns

TIMELINE USE

Groups contain related events/dates; for example, Egyptian dynasty 21 has all the Pharaohs and Data grouped together. As you zoom in or out, some groups may shift.

It may be advantageous to zoom IN as that will bring some groups that are "piled" high will then come into view.

Zoom, Fullscreen mode - buttons on the right
Moving whole timeline - 3 finger swipe move
Square mouse box - expand/collapse individual groups

__________

This represents the hard work (even potentially life's work) of many scholars, researchers, theologians, archaeologists, astronomers, historians, etc., as a historical and scientific presentation. A special mention for data in this graphic compilation to Gérard Gertoux for his outstanding work.
__________

Clearly, this demonstrates a timeline with a beginning and an end, but it's much more than that. I implore you to look at the bigger picture.

From conception, man is inherently opposed to God, whether they realize it or not. Fallen human nature from Adam is persistent and consistent throughout history to today. “…the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is not even able to do so…”, Romans 8:7.

If you don’t believe in God, then Romans 8:7, and for that matter, anything quoted from the Bible, admittedly becomes irrelevant. In fact, in that case, I would expect that you would ask for even more evidence of God or God's Sovereignty… other signs, which would ultimately still not be enough. “If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead [a miracle],” Luke 16:31, “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God”, 1Cor. 1:18. Stephen Armstrong (verse by verse ministry) addresses this; the typical response of someone opposed to God is to ask for a sign and question; they “demand that God prove himself to their satisfaction… demand that the Bible is accurate before they will believe the gospel… [essentially] demanding that God remove the need for faith, until a person is given eyes to see by the Holy Spirit”. Armstrong continues, “Jesus knew that faith was not the product of persuasion or analysis or reasoning… saving faith is a supernatural change in the heart done by God alone.” So, until then (the heart-changing Holy Spirit), there is no amount of convincing, or signs of God’s sovereignty that will persuade an unbelieving heart. In other words, “…no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit”, 1Cor 12:3. Jesus himself addresses this, “‘How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.’ Jesus answered them, ‘I told you, and you do not believe; the works that I do in My Father’s name, these testify of me. But you do not believe me because you are not of My sheep. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow me…’”, John 10:24-28. If you don’t believe, then nothing will make you believe, UNLESS the Holy Spirit comes to you. So, in addition to putting those who don’t believe in God in an eternally tough spot (!)… if you don’t believe in God, then this timeline really doesn’t even matter at all!!

On the other hand, if you believe in God, Armstrong (as above) expounds, “A sign can be used by God to connect those dots in a believing mind and thereby strengthen faith and bring encouragement…”, however, “…no sign can substitute for faith in the word of God.” Faith! “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”, Hebrews 11:1. Faith is complete trust or confidence in God, WITHOUT seeing anything. And faith comes directly from God. “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God…”, Ephesians 2:8. So, for those who believe, I hope this timeline indeed strengthens your faith.

Ultimately, perhaps this timeline will be a spark to open the door of your heart if you don’t believe in God. Perhaps God is saying, “I was here from the beginning… look, here’s the proof.” Perhaps my God… and your God (whether you admit it or not) … in His unquestionable sovereignty is figuratively shaking ALL of us by our shoulders, saying “WAKE UP…, LOOK..., we’re at the END of the Age of the Gentiles… we’re in the LAST apostate church age (Laodicea)… so, come to me!”. I believe He is.

I can't say it better, or emphasize the underlying value of this timeline, than Paul David Tripp in Morning Mercies. "Think for a moment about the flow of biblical history. Think of the many generations of people that existed between the fall of Adam and Eve and the birth of Jesus Christ. Think of the myriad situations and locations in that span of time. Think of all the human governments that rose and fell. Think of all the decisions, great and small, that people made. Think of the constant life-and-death cycle of the physical creation. Now consider this - in order for Jesus to be born as promised, to live as was necessary, and to die and rise on our behalf as he said he would, God had to exercise absolute rule over the forces of nature and complete control over the events of human history so that, at just the right moment, Jesus would be born, live, die, and rise again for our redemption." The one thing, the most important event in history, that should really matter to us most, is the salvation provided by Jesus, and him alone.

Thank you for your comments. I’ve labeled various stages of rebuilding the temple and Jerusalem… note the temple exterior finished in 515 BC, the order for interior temple beautification in 468 BC, Jerusalem finished in 406 BC.

“The starting point of the 490 years is set: 'from the going forth of the word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem'. This order to restore and rebuild Jerusalem was given by Artaxerxes I in the month of Nisan in the 20th year of his reign (Ne 2:1,5,8) in April 455 BCE. As Nehemiah said that the city wall was completed in 52 days on 25 Elul (22 September), he therefore made to hear this 'word to restore and rebuild Jerusalem' on 3 Ab (2 August) to the Jewish deputy rulers who returned to the city (Ne 2:16-18). Thus Ezra and Nehemiah gave a precise chronology: Cyrus issued a decree releasing the Jews in his 1st year of reign (Ezr 1:1-2), thus the Jews arrived in Jerusalem around October 538 BCE. The 2nd month of the 2nd year of their arrival (May 537 BCE) they began rebuilding the Temple, which was completed at the end of the 6th year of Darius I (in 515 BCE). In the 7th year of his reign, Artaxerxes I requested Ezra (in 468 BCE) to go to Jerusalem to beautify the Temple then, in his 20th year, he gave the order to Nehemiah to rebuild the city and not only the Temple. The city was finally inaugurated in 406 (= 455 - 7x7) towards the end of the reign of Darius II (Ne 12:22).” [Gertoux]

“The appearance of the Messiah foretold by Daniel then was to occur 4 years before the end of the 11th Jubilee. Eusebius had already noted this point in his Chronicle, where he said that Jesus started preaching on Olympiad 202:1 (29 CE), which corresponded to the 81st Jubilee according to Hebrew tradition.” [Gertoux]

It is impossible for the building of the second Temple to have begun in 536 BC as the prophecy of Daniel 9 gives 69 'weeks' (483 years) until 'Messiah the Prince'. The very latest it could possibly be is 455 BC which would be more accurate to the 'anointing' (baptism) being no sooner than 27AD and His being 'cut off' in the middle of that 7 year span in 31AD, which is the only year that matches the Hebrew calendar for all pertinent events.

You are correct! I failed to hit the BC button. Now corrected. Thank you very much! Let me know if you see something else.

Why is Jesus born before John the Baptist?
Jesus' ascension is missing.
