Isaac is weaned at 5 years old115; 400 years of affliction begin (Genesis 15:13). This
period starts when Isaac is persecuted by Agar's son116 (Genesis 21:8-9) and ends with the Exodus from Egypt and the end of slavery117 (Galatians 4:25-29). The 400-year period begins with the oppression of Isaac and not from his birth.

In 1938 BCE birth of Isaac (Gn 21:5), Ishmael was 14 years old (Gn 16:16). Five years later (in 1933 BCE) Ishmael was mocking Isaac (Gn 21:9), that event was symbolically the beginning of the affliction in Egypt (Ga 4:22-25), which ended in 1533 BCE, 400 years later (Gn 15:13).
