Archaeological excavations in Kullaba from 1928-1929 unearthed a huge building built on a platform (mastaba), which was accessed by means of a monumental staircase. This high-rise building dominated the settlement and appeared as a link between the sky and the earth, so it was called the White Temple. A second, more recent building, called É.ANNA “Temple of God/Sky”, adjoined the White Temple. The absence of altars and religious furniture has led researchers to question the religious vocation of these buildings, but the overall plan nevertheless suggests that they are a sacred space. The complete absence of inscriptions does not allow this question to be decided, but two indications suggest that the White Temple, or “White House”, was in some way a kind of “presidential palace” or “basilica”. The relatively good condition of this building, called the White Temple, allowed a reconstruction of its original form. The remains of a wall surrounding the city have been dated to around 2500 BCE, which corresponds to the reign of Gilgamesh. This White Temple existed at his time because this king cites it under the name of the Sublime Temple (É.GAL.MAḪ) in which the queen Ninsuna, Gilgamesh’s mother, officiated (Epic III:14-28).
