EGYPTIAN CHRONOLOGY THROUGH ASTRONOMICALLY DATED SYNCHRONISMS by Gerard Gertoux

Having learned of the collapse of the kingdom of Mitanni, annexed by Assyrian king Shalmaneser I, Ramses II preferred to stabilize the volatile situation with Hittite king Hattušili III by a peace treaty, dated I Peret 21, year 21 of Ramses II (1st half of year 21).

• The Treaty of the year 21 led to an era of stability, which pushed Ramses II to boost his ties by suggesting to Hattušili III to marry one of his daughters. The Hittite king accepted and proposed to send his daughter [Maathorneferure] for his 2nd jubilee (year 33). Negotiations for the marriage began IV Akhet of year 33 but were finally concluded only III Peret of year 34 because of the reluctance of Puduhepa, Hattušili III's wife.
• Relations between the two kings became so cordial that Ramses II, after his 4th jubilee year 39, proposed to the Hittite king to meet him in person. Hattušili III appears to have accepted and proposed, as a pledge, another of his daughters to Ramses II to seal this agreement at the top. Nothing is known of the name and fate of the girl who followed her sister into the harem of Ramses II. There is also no more information on later relationships between the two courts. The wedding date is not specified, but presumably it intervened in the year 42, because it is from this time that Ramses II assumed his new title of “Sovereign God of Heliopolis” (found in cuneiform texts).
