Ethnic Cleansing vs. Genocide: Ethnic cleansing is the destruction or removal of an ethnic group in a localised area, while genocide has the aim of wholesale eradication of a group, ethnic or otherwise. ----
TAGS:
----- (Excluding the geographical Tags) The tags are not authoritative designators but instead serve for visualization and perspective. It is important to note that in most cases of genocide and ethnic cleansing there are multiple intersecting identities, some primary and some secondary, on which the oppressors distinguish themselves from the oppressed.
-------
MEANING:
-------
Religiously Motivated - By groups which identify themselves with a faith or claim to represent in whole or in part the members of a faith. For example: the Romanian Iron Guard, a fascist movement in Romania for which Christian identity and faith were inseparable from Romanian identity. As participants in the Holocaust, they targeted Jews not just on an ethnic and ideological basis (like Nazi Germany) but on the belief that they were defending the Christian faith from Judaism.
-----
Similarly, Hindu nationalists claim to defend all of Hinduism and all Hindu people from Islam, or Jewish Zionists claim to defend the Jewish people and faith from Islam and Christian Zionists who legitimise Israeli colonialism for theological and eschatological reasons.
-----
Ethno-nationalism – Older and more pervasive than fascism, and also not necessarily totalitarian, corporatist, Eurocentric, anti-liberal, or anti-communist. -----
In fact, it can overlap with communism, liberalism, monarchism and any other form of ideology.
-----
Colonial Genocide – A genocide which is caused by the intertwined nature of capitalist colonial expansionism and economic subtraction with the partial or wholesale enslavement, exploitation and eradication of peoples through a varied number of means, such as artificial famine, neglect of colonial subjects, apartheid, population displacement and settlerism.
