jan 1, 1999 - Founding of Genocide Watch

Description:

Genocide Watch is a non-governmental organisation founded in 1999 by Gregory H. Stanton. Its cited purpose is to predict, prevent, stop, and punish genocide and other forms of mass murder by raising awareness, influencing public policy, and mobilising a global coalition dedicated to genocide prevention.

It has an all-volunteer staff of around 35 people. It operates as a fully virtual organisation rather than maintaining multiple physical offices. It works across numerous countries worldwide through its partnerships, monitoring network, and coordination of the International Alliance to End Genocide.

Over the years it has achieved various significant outcomes, including:

- Becoming the first international NGO focused exclusively on genocide prevention.

- Coordinating the Alliance Against Genocide / International Alliance to End Genocide, a global coalition of anti-genocide organisations.

- Developing the influential “Ten Stages of Genocide” model, widely used in genocide prevention research and education.

- Issuing Genocide Alerts, Warnings, and Emergencies, often being among the first to identify emerging risks.

- Contributing to international advocacy efforts that supported the development of genocide-prevention mechanisms, accountability structures, and public awareness campaigns.

- Formally recognising and classifying various historical genocides, including the 1971 Bangladesh genocide, among others.
