Period 5: 1844-1877

Period 5 (1844–1877) saw the U.S. expand westward under Manifest Destiny, which fueled tensions over slavery and led to the Civil War between the North and South. After the war, Reconstruction attempted to integrate formerly enslaved people and protect their rights, but many gains were rolled back after 1877.
