Prior to the End of Reconstruction, the Civil War ended and the North won. The 13th Amendment passed and it freed plenty of enslaved people. While African Americans were getting freedom, the Freedmen Bureau was created to help African Americans transition to not being a slave no more. Southern resistance also began, and passed Black Codes to limit African Americans rights.During the end of reconstruction,Ulysses S. Grant's presidency focused on Reconstruction and protecting African Americans. The Panic of 1873 caused economic troubles and depression, which weakened North's support for reconstruction. While, the White supremacist group the KKK was on a rise in the south, and used violence to supress African Americans. The Amnesty Act of 1872 helped restore rights to confederates, and property, while reducing the Rpeublican control in the South.
