Compare/Contrast:
North: Let African Americans serve significantly earlier in the war. They considered all African American soldiers free people. At first, it was hard to convince white soldiers and generals to fight alongside African Americans, but eventually, they did.
South: They only let African Americans fight late in the war when they had no choice. They gave African American soldiers their freedom, but that meant very little when many had already fled to Union lines.Periods
Southern slaves are sometimes eager to serve with Confederacy so they can escape to Union lines.
