mar 1, 1864 - Ulysses S. Grant named commander of all Union forces; Sherman is a ruthless commanding general

Description:

From then on, Lincoln made overall strategies, and Grant listened and acted. Lincoln wanted a simultaneous advance against the major Confederate armies, which Grant liked, for a decisive victory before the 1864 election.

Grant- relied on industrial tech and targeting enemy infrastructure

Before:
July 1863: Grant led at Vickburg
November 1863: Grant saves Union army in Chattanooga, Tennessee using railroads.

Grant thought cautious tactics prolonged the war. He was okay with heavy casualties. Called a butcher. Followed Lieber's code, wanting to end war swiftly.

General William Tecumseh Sherman- shared Grant's harsh outlook. As a young military officer stationed in the South, Sherman had sympathized with the planter class and felt that slavery upheld social stability. However, secession meant “anarchy,” he believed in hard war (destroyed guerilla southerners, thought southern men were responsible for war for voting for secession.)
