Britain ahd never recognized Confederacy as ain independent nation. Now, they saw them as a belligerent powerwho could borrow money and buy weapons. THey stockpiled cotton then bought it from Egypt and INdia.
result: southern U.S. cotton would never dominate global markets again.
Ship impoundment:
1862-British built ironclad cruiser called the CSS ALabama attacked merchant ships.
Confederacy-about to get two more ironclads delivered but British gov realized the Union was more likely to win and impounded the warships. British didn't like slavery. They also had poor grain harvests. they needed wheat and flour from American Midwest (King Wheat) not Cotton King.
