Description:

Symbolic end of war, virginia: Grant gains control of Petersburg and forces Lee to abandon Richmond after curing off his escape route to North Carolina. Lincoln visits the confederate capital's ruins to be greeted by freed people.

On April 9, Lee surrenders at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. Grant let the confederate officers and men go home if they promised not to fight again. By late May, all the secessionist armies and governments were done.
