14th May 1948 David Ben-Gurion delivers Israel's Declaration of Independance and becomes the first Prime Minister of Israel.

29th November 1947 United Nations voted to split Palestine into two states, One Jewish and One Arab. The Arabs swore to resist the creation of a Jewish State, even by war. The partition plan gave the Jews of Palestine ownership of a small state within the land of Israel. Areas with predominantly Arab populations, were to become part of the Arab State. Predominantly Jewish areas were to be to the Jews (as well as Negev). Jerusalem was to be internationaled.
14th January 1948 Jewish settlements are attacked by Arabs en masse. However, an elaborate counter attack sees the Jews defeat the Arabs at Gush Etzion. This can be largely credited to Ben-Gurions commitment to protecting Jewish settlements despite military advice.

5th June 1967 Six Day War begins Israel launches an air attack on Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in response to the request by Egyptian president Nasser that the UN withdraw its forces from Egyptian territory and the buildup of Arab armies along Israel's borders. After 6 days, a cease-fire is declared and Israel occupies the Sinai Peninsula, Golan Heights, Gaza Strip and West Bank.
6th September 1972 Munich Massacre; at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, Palestinian terrorist group Black September killed 2 Israeli athletes and took 9 hostage. They demanded the release of 250 Palestinian and Lebanese prisoners held in Israel. The ordeal ends with 5 terrorists being killed but not before they executed the remaining 9 hostages.

14th May 1948 In response to their declaration of Independance, Israel is invaded by neighbouring Arab nations who rejected the partition of Palestine. This spawned the Israeli War of Independance. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) is also formed which proved to be more efficient and effective than their Arab enemies.
February 24th 1949 An armistice agreement is reached between Israel and Egypt. However, no formal peace treaty is signed.

April 3rd 1949 An armistice agreement is reached between Israel and Jordan. However, no formal peace treaty is signed.
July 20th 1949 An armistice agreement is reached between Israel and Syria. However, no formal peace treaty is signed.
1949 Israel increases its original territory by 50%, taking western Galilee, a broad corridor through central Palestine to Jerusalem, and part of modern Jerusalem. The new border is called the Green Line. As many as 750,000 Palestinians either flee or are forced from what was previously Palestine. The Palestinian defeat and exodus is known as the Nakba, or disaster.
11th May 1949 Israel's government, with Chaim Weizmann as president and David Ben-Gurion as prime minister, is admitted to the UN.
26th July 1956 Egypt takes control of The Suez Canal. An important trade route.
October 29th 1956 Israel launches attack on Egypt's Sinai peninsula and drives toward Suez Canal.
November 6th 1956 A cease-fire, forced by U.S. pressure, stops British, French, and Israeli advance.
June 2nd 1964 The Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) is formed. The group is led by Egypt and the Arab League and is committed to the dissoulotion of Israel.
By purchasing arms through Communist Czechoslovakia, The Soviets began supporting and supplying the Arab Nations.
The Americans and Particularly the French began supporting Israel.
November 22nd 1967 The UN Security Council adopts Resolution 242, the "land for peace" formula, which has been the starting point for further negotiations.
April 1969 Violence continues along the Suez Canal as Egyptian president Gamal Nasser declared the 1967 cease-fire void along the canal. The War of Attrition begins. Neither side claims victory, and a cease-fire is signed in August 1970.
October 6th 1973 The fourth and largest Arab-Israeli conflict begins when Egyptian and Syrian forces attack Israel as Jews mark Yom Kippur, holiest day in their calendar. Initial Arab gains are reversed when a cease-fire takes effect on November 11.
November 20th 1977 Egyptian President Anwar Sadat visits Jerusalem to discuss peace agreements and the Knesset, raising hopes for world peace.
March 1978 Following raids from Palestinian guerrilla raids on Israel from Lebanese territory, Israeli troops cross the Lebanese border. Troops withdraw later in June at the hands of the UN.
26th March 1979 Egypt and Israel sign a formal peace treaty, establishing diplomatic and commercial realations.
25th April 1982 Israel completes the return of the Sinai to Egyptian control.
June 9th 1982 Peace in the middle east comes to a sudden end when launch an huge attack on Southern Lebanon, where a large number of PLO troops are stationed. The PLO withdraws their troops.
May 17th 1982 Under mediation from the US, an accord is reached between Lebanon and Israel. Israel agrees to withdraw their troops
June 1985 As per the Israeli-Lebanese accord of 1982, most of Israel's forces have vacated Lebanon. However, a small force remains.
December 9th 1987 Palestinians living on the West Bank and the Gaza Strip riot against their Israeli rule. Police attempt to crack down on the riots however Palestinians retaliate. More than 20,000 people are killed throughout the entire ordeal.
October 30th 1991 The Madrid Conference is organised by the US and The Soviet Union. Israeli, Lebanese, Jordanian, Syrian, and Palestinian leaders met to establish a framework for peace negotiations.
