In Missouri, Churchill delivers a speech declaring that Europe
had been divided by an 'Iron Curtain', meaning the Soviets
extended their influence to the west and were not permitting
democracy in the east.
Truman realised that without US assistance, Europe was at
risk from communist expansion. The majority of Europe was
economically crippled following the war and needed help.22nd February 1946: Long telegram is received.
Telegram from American Diplomat in Russia to Truman
explaining that the USSR could not be negotiated and a
tougher stance was needed. Convinced Truman that the
way to deal with the soviets was a containment policy.
A strategy intended to prevent the USSR from expanding.
