Timeline of the Japanese Railway
Year 604 AD -- Prince Shotoku's Constitution of seventeen articles is promulgated.
Year 645 AD -- The Taika reform is introduced. The Fujiwara era starts.
Year 710 AD -- Nara becomes the first permanent capital of Japan.
Year 784 AD -- The capital moves from Nara to Nagaoka
Year 794 AD -- The capital moves to Heian, or what is now known as Kyoto
Year 1016 AD -- Fujiwara Michinaga becomes regent, marking the peak of the Fujiwara power
Year 1159 AD -- The Taira Clan, under Taira Kiyomori, rise to power after the Heiji War.
Year 1175 AD -- The Buddhist Jodo sect (Pure land sect) is introduced.
Year 1191 AD -- The Zen sect is introduced.
Year 1192 AD -- Minamoto Yoritomo is appointed shogun and establishes the Kamakura government in Kamakura.
Year 1221 AD -- The Jokyu Disturbance ends a struggle between Kamakura and Kyoto, resulting in the supremacy of the Hojo regents in Kamakura.
Year 1232 AD -- A legal code, the Joei Shikimoku, is promulgated.
Year 1274 AD -- The Mongols try to invade Japan, but fail mainly because of bad weather conditions.
Year 1281 AD -- The Mongols attempt another invasion, but fail again due to bad weather conditions.
Year 1333 AD -- The Kamakura government collapses.
Year 1334 AD -- Kemmu Restoration: the emperor restores power over Japan.
Year 1336 AD -- Ashikaga Takauji invades and captures Kyoto.
Year 1337 AD -- The emperor flees and establishes the Southern court in Yoshino.
Year 1338 AD -- Takauji establishes the Muromachi government and a second emperor in Kyoto (Northern court).
Year 1392 AD -- Unification of the Southern and Northern courts.
Year 1542 AD -- Portuguese introduce firearms and Christianity to Japan.
Year 1568 AD -- Nobunaga enters Kyoto
Year 1573 AD -- The Muromachi government collapses.
Year 1575 AD -- The Takeda clan is defeated in the battle of Nagashino.
Year 1582 AD -- Nobunaga is murdered and succeeded by Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Year 1588 AD -- Hideyoshi confiscates the weapons of farmers and religious institutions in the "Sword Hunt".
Year 1590 AD -- Japan is reunited after the fall of Odawara (Hojo).
Year 1598 AD -- Death of Hideyoshi.
Year 1600 AD -- Tokugawa Ieyasu defeats his rivals in the battle of Sekigahara.
Year 1603 AD -- Ieyasu is appointed shogun and establishes the Tokugawa government in Edo (Tokyo).
Year 1615 AD -- The Toyotomi clan is destroyed after Ieyasu captures Osaka Castle.
Year 1639 AD -- Isolation of Japan from the rest of the world except for strictly regulated trade with China, Korea, the Netherlands, the Ryukyu Kingdom and the Ainu.
Year 1792 AD -- The Russians unsuccessfully try to establish trade relations with Japan.
Year 1854 AD -- Commodore Matthew Perry forces the Japanese government to open a limited number of ports for trade.
Year 1868 AD -- Meiji Restoration.
Year 1868 AD -- The capital moves from Kyoto to Tokyo.
Year 1872 AD -- First railway line between Tokyo and Yokohama.
Year 1889 AD -- The Meiji Constitution is promulgated.
Year 1910 AD -- Annexation of Korea.
Year 1912 AD -- Death of Emperor Meiji.
Year 1923 AD -- The Great Kanto Earthquake devastates Tokyo and Yokohama.
Year 1931 AD -- The Manchurian Incident.
Year 1992 AD -- Burst of the Bubble Economy.
Year 1995 AD -- The Great Hanshin Earthquake hits Kobe.
Year 1995 AD -- Sarin Gas attack in the Tokyo subway by Aum sect.
Year 2011 AD -- The Great East Japan Earthquake hits the Tohoku Region.
Year 1937 AD -- Second Sino-Japanese War starts.
Year 1941 AD -- Pacific War starts.
Year 1945 AD -- Japan surrenders after atomic bombs are dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Year 1946 AD -- The new constitution is promulgated.
Year 1952 AD -- The Allied Occupation of Japan ends.
Year 1956 AD -- Japan becomes member of the UN.
Year 1972 AD -- Normalization of relations with China.
Year 1973 AD -- Oil crisis.
Year 100 BC -- Rice agriculture is introduced into Japan.
Year 400 AD -- The country would be unified for the first time as Yamato Japan.
Year 1000 AD -- The rise of the military class (samurai)
Year 538 AD - 552 AD -- The introduction of Buddhism
Year 1180-1185 AD -- In the Gempei War, the Minamoto clan puts an end to Taira supremacy.
Year 1467-1477 AD -- Onin war.
Year 1592-1598 AD -- Unsuccessful invasion of Korea.
Year 1688-1703 AD -- Genroku era: popular culture flourishes.
Year 1894-1895 AD -- Sino-Japanese War.
Year 1904-1905 AD -- Russo-Japanese War.
Year 1914-1918 AD -- Japan joins allied forces in WW1.
