Sunni and Shi'a Muslims. Islamic cities were bigger and more civilised than European counterparts, performing a variety of functions (trade centre, sacred centre, transport hub etc). Non-Muslims could live in Muslim cities but payed Jizya tax. Islamic society was advanced by European standards.
