Encomienda
Description:
The Encomienda was a labor system introduced by Spanish colonists. The Spanish Monarch gave land and Native Americans to the Conquistadors in the Americas. The conquistadores then forced the Native Americans to work for them. Along with forcing the Native Americans to do work, the Conquistadores also had the obligation of converting them from their polytheistic religions, to Christianity. Although it was introduced as a labor system to help Native Americans, the Encomienda wound up becoming a form of slavery.
