Francisco José de Goya was a Spanish romantic painter and printmaker. Goya is often referred to as both the last of the Old Masters and the first of the moderns. His early career was marked by portraits of the Spanish aristocracy and royalty, and Rococo style tapestry cartoons designed for the royal palace. Later on, he became (deaf and) pessimistic. He began the series of aquatinted etchings, published in 1799 as the Caprichos—completed in parallel with the more official commissions of portraits and religious paintings since these prints were a medium for his condemnation of the universal follies and foolishness in the Spanish society. Those prints are very romantic, the text on one of these prints (No. 43) shows it very clear: 'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters'.
Important works:
1. La maja desnuda (1790-1800) --> this was the first totally life-size female nude in Western art without allegorical or mythological meaning.
