Causes:
prestige and status: aka pride and ego
Britain wasn’t respecting America as a full independent nation, and so America decided they needed to stand up for themselves and prove to Britain that they are an independent nation
Impressment: the British navy took American ships and sailors on the open ocean → British said they were keeping the seas safe, americans said it was kidnapping and piracy
Hartford Convention (1814-1815):
Federalists held a private meeting that they thought no one else knew about
They thought that the British would win, and so they didn’t fight and stayed as neutral as possible so that they would be favorable to British after the war was over
Killed the Federalist Party
Battle of New Orleans (1814-1815):
Andrew Jackson and his tiny rag-tag army vs the huge well trained British army
Battle only lasted 30 minutes, because the British surrendered
2,000 British died and 70 Americans died
Wasn’t supposed to happen because the Treaty of Ghent had already been signed, but no one in America knew about it
Treaty of Ghent (signed 1814):
Reconfirmed what the Revolutionary War had established
