When the Russian governor of Finland approaches the Aland islands to oversee the territorial transfer promised in the Finland War's peace treaty ten years prior, he is fired upon by Swedish coastal fortifications.
A Swedish naval offensive rushes forward, dealing massive damage to Tallinn and Helsinki, dropping off marine infantry units in both cities.
Russia, completely unprepared for the notion of Swedish resistance, did not have more than a few militia regiments in either Estonia or Finland and loses several major cities over the course of 1816, but St Petersburg is defended from Swedish assault by the Royal Guard Corps.
The Russian army, half of it on the western border and another third in the caucasus, takes until September 26th, 1816, to assemble more than 20,000 men (the amount requested by the Tsar as the baseline for a counter-attack) at St Petersburg.
Subsequently, Sweden wins a surprise victory at the Battle of Viipuri, but the Swedish commander miscalculates and decides to route the Russian force. He is greeted by another 10,000 Russian arrivers, turning the tide against Sweden.
Until 1819, Russia and Sweden fight a war of slow Swedish retreats with naval stalemates along the war, until the Swedish soldiers, about to return to Helsinki, are surprised by Russian elite forces that had been dropped into the city a few days prior.
The Swedish commander had not heard of the decisive defeat at sea that the Swedish navy took about a week before the incident.
In the ensuing slaughter, Sweden sustains 39,000 casualties against Russia's 21,000. The Swedish army has to surrender and 15,000 are taken prisoner, most of whom would die in captivity.
Russia seizes Aland in February of 1820, after the Swedish Navy loses in its last stand.
The Swedish government refuses surrender until Russian troops manage to gain a foothold on the central Swedish coast on June 27th, 1821.
Overseen by France, an armistice is signed on July 3rd, the Aland Islands being transferred as part of the peace deal that would be signed on July 9th.
