Two years after Geoffrey Martel's seizure of the bishop of Le Mans, the king of France launches a punitive expedition against him, with the support of other vassals, including William. Geoffrey is also excommunicated, but refuses to hand over the bishop of Le Mans and continues to extend northwards.
