A protective tariff was signed into the law by the US government. South Carolinian's especially John C. Calhoun Strongly disagreed with the high tariffs and felt that they targeted the South unfairly South Carolina nullified the law saying that it was unconstitutional until a force bill was threatened which would bring the national army into the state to make sure the law was followed A compromise took place where the government would lower the tax and South Carolina would lift the nullification.
