Fort Sumter April 12 - 14, 1861
Summary: The Confederate states demanded the surrender of Ft. Sumter, but the Union commander refused to surrender.
Outcome: On April 1861 the Confederates began firing at Fort Sumter and later U.S. troops surrendered.
Significance: This was the 1st battle fought in the Civil War. President Lincoln's call to raise arms raised to 75,000. Also, several more states in the south seceded.
Summary: President Abraham Lincoln had declared all slaves to be free as of January 1st, 1863 in states that were in rebellion. This didn't include the slaves that were in border states that still remained part of the Union.
Emancipation Proclamation September 22, 1862
Outcome: Only a few slaves were freed. There wasn't an immediate effect because the confederate states didn't act on the order Lincoln had made.
Significance: Lincoln's proclamation would be the fist step the federal government would take for the abolishment of slavery.
Battle of Gettysburg July 1 - 3, 1863
Summary: General Robert E. Lee had invaded the North and later was met by the Union army at Gettysburg, PA.
Outcome: This battle was a Union victory with 51,000 total estimated casualties.
Significance: This was the turning point in the Civil War. The Confederate army would never invade Union territory because the casualties were really great.
Vicksburg July 4, 1863
Summary: In effect of the Union naval blockade of southern ports, Confederate cotton now had to be shipped across the Mississippi river.
Outcome: This was a Union victory with 19,233 total estimated casualties.
Significance: The Vicksburg siege split the confederacy in half also cut of their cotton sales to other markets that were foreign.
Gettysburg Address November 19, 1863
Summary: The main purpose of the Gettysburg Address was to honor the dead. In Lincoln's speech he also highlighted liberty and equality as core components for the Emancipation of America.
Outcome: The outcome of this speech was that it redefined the Civil War a struggle for freedom or liberty for all. It was also said that it could create a unified nation.
Significance: Lincoln's speech regarded as one of the greatest and noblest speeches in all American history. This speech also served to reignite and encourage the Union soldiers to fight against the confederacy.
Appomattox Court House April 9, 1865
Summary: After four years of the Civil War, General Robert E. Lee who was part of the Confederacy army surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant who was part of the Union Army.
Outcome: This was a Union victory because the confederates had surrendered. General Grant also offered really generous surrender terms.
Significance: When general Robert E. Lee surrendered to general Ulysses S. Grant this ended the American Civil War and began the process of reuniting the United States of America.
Lincoln's Assassination April 15, 1865
Summary: Lincoln took Mary and other two guests to Ford's theatre where they watched a play called "Our American Cousin" to celebrate the end of the war.
Outcome: Booth made his way to the private box where Lincoln, his wife , and their two guests were watching the play. It was in that moment when he shot Lincoln in the back of the head.
Significance: The growth of the president's reputation after his death which was influenced by the timing and circumstances of his murder won him a kind of sainthood.
