(1901) Federation - The Common Wealth of Australia was proclaimed, unifying the six colonies. With Australia still being under British Domination.
(1907) Alliances: Britain, France, and Russia from the Triple Entente.
(1882) Alliances: Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy form the Triple Alliance.
(1898) Militarism: Germany set out to create a navy twice the size of Britain’s – claimed its navy was essential to protect its trade.
(28 June 1914) Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the Austrian the throne was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip while on a state visit to Sarajevo.
With the backing of Germany, Austria declared war on Serbia. Alliances meant that within 2 months all the major powers of Europe would be drawn into the war.
(September 1914) 20,000 soldiers had been enlisted to join the army. This was the first time Australia had a chance to participate in such conflict and it was much hyped and it was considered every young man's duty to serve his country and you were seen as a 'coward' if you did not serve.
(December 1914) The first soldiers were sent to train in Egpyt. They were joined by 10,000 troops from New Zealand.
(25 April 1915) 16,000 ANZAC soldiers land at Gallipoli, with 2000 to dying that evening.
(March 1916) Western Front: The AIF were sent to France to fight on the Western Front (a line of trenches built along the borders of France and Germany from the Belgian coast through to Swiss border).
(8 January 1916) Gallipoli campaign ends with 8,709 dead, 19,441 wounded and 28,150 total casualties. This is also sometimes regarded as the "birth" of Australian culture as we know it today.
(1918 November 11) The Armistice is signed, ends the fighting, it is celebrated greatly back in Australia. With 58,961 soldiers dead, 152,171 wounded and 416,809 enlisted in total.
(1918 December 1) Members of the AIF begin to return to Melbourne are welcomed back to their homes and communities, being regarded as heroes and that "did their part." With many also grieving for those who could not make it back, especially those who now had broken families.
(15 August 1914) Australian Imperial Force (AIF) is formed.
(25 April 1915) Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) is formed as the Australians and New Zealanders land at Gallipoli.
(1915 August 1) First Australian troops sent to Egypt to defend British interests against the Ottoman Empire (Turkey). This event is considered Australia's first partaking in the war and was a very exciting time for those watching from back home.
