The Battle of Passchendaele Haig's plan was made because the Germans were stopping their naval routes to give war supplies. So, he had a plan; he said if they could break through the German frontlines in Belgium. They could advance to the coast and liberate the posts. After General Douglas Haig showed his plan to the British war cabinet. They did approve his plan and the battle was to start on July 31 2017. This decision was made even though the British Prime Minister was skeptical.
Private Tommy Holmes He served with the 4th Canadian Mounted Rifles which fought, on the right flank, the flank was stopped by heavy machine gunfire from German concrete forts called pillboxes. Alone, Holmes took out two enemy machine gun crews with grenades, under heavy fire. He returned and hurled another grenade at the entrance of a third pillbox, prompting its nineteen occupants to surrender. Then he won a Victoria Cross for his achievement.
Private James Roberston During the final assault on Passchendaele, Robertson hurried to an opening on a German flank and rushed at the gun while his platoon was caught in barbed wire. Robertson killed four crew members in the struggle for the gun. His platoon advanced as he fired the captured gun at the retreating forces. Robertson later died on the field, after being hit by a bursting shell while trying to carry a wounded sniper trapped in front of a trench.
Private Cecil Kinross Kinross’s company came under intense German machine gun fire. Alone, he stripped off all his equipment and charged across the field, at the guns. He killed the six-man crew and destroyed their gun. Though severely wounded, he allowed the company to advance 300 meters. After that he won a Victoria cross for his extreme bravery
The End of the Battle After the village of Passchendaele had 15,600 casualties. These people weren't even soldiers. The amount of soldiers that died were 569,000 which is a huge amount for a battle that did not last very long. The British did win but it wasn't worth the amount lives that were lost for capturing the ports. This is known as one of the worst honors to have in World War 1. This war is a symbol of the senseless slaughter in World War 1.
Passage of The Battle of Passchendaele The historical significance of this war would be between national and global. The reason for this is that there were only a few countries. Even though it was heart-wrenching. It can't be one of them. Canadians in this war accomplished showing everyone that we are a brave country. There were many Canadians who did proud for our country. The reason why this is a national monument is because this war was tragic. With all the deaths and people who fought hard.
