In October of 1929, the U.S. stock market collapsed, this event is referred to as the great Crash of 29. On October 29, Black Tuesday, U.S. stocks lost the greatest percent of their value of any day in U.S. history. Between September 1929 and June 1932, U.S. stock exchanges lost $179 billion in value. The Stock Market crash of 1929 did not cause, but rather marked, the beginning of the Great Depression. The great depression was characterized by extremely high levels of unemployment (as high as 25%), a marked decrease in business investment and productivity (measured by GDP) and unprecedented business and bank failures (5000 banks failed between 1930 and 1932).
