The Influence of Sea Power Upon History 1660-1783. Mahan's book published in 1890 asserted that nations whose navies were able to control the seas, exerted extensive power and control in the world. His book combined with the U.S experience in the Spanish American War served as the impetus for later U.S. naval expansion and calls for a Central American canal.
