The first deep submarine value was found in the center of Monterey Bay, off the coast of California. It was found by James Alden who was a commanding officer of the Coast Survey Steamer Active. This canyon is known as the Monterey Canyon. It goes 95 miles into the Pacific and is 11,800 feet deep.
