In the eastern Pacific Ocean, scientists discovered deep sea hydrothermal vents. These vents had scalding hot water pouring out and provided nutrients to bacteria and other organisms.
This event was significant because it was the first time an ecosystem was found that relied on chemical energy known as chemo-synthesis instead of sunlight and photosynthesis.
