Until the 1840s most biologists still believed that cells formed spontaneously from body fluids or from the nucleus, which they thought was the embryo of a new cell. ThenRobert Remak discovered that a new call is formed by a single cell dividing in two, which the nucelus dividing at the same time. In the 1850s Rudolph Virchow used Remaks discovery to popularise the theory of biogenesis., that all cells come from pre existing cells. Because of Virchows great popularity this theory was quickly accepted in Europe, and then the rest of the world.
