In the 1840s, the people grew more and more unhappy. This discontent furthered when a recession hit towards the end of the decade. Poor harvests and closing factories caused many people to lose their livelihoods and critics began to blame the government. The government tried to silence these critics in February of 1848. This resulted in the “February Days,” a period full of huge protests and clashes between the royal troops and the people. Radical Socialists took control of France and proclaimed the Second Republic, but it didn’t last long for the wealthy to take control. Workers didn’t like this, so they took to the streets and violence broke out during a period called the “June Days.” By the end of 1848, members of the National Assembly issued a new constitution which had a strong president and one-house legislature, which helped restore peace. They also gave every adult male the right to vote, which was a huge deal at the time. Louis Napoleon won the presidency by a landslide and ended up proclaiming himself emperor. This Second Empire was supposed to restore the glory from the days of Napoleon Bonaparte, but Louis Napoleon’s empire eventually collapsed and with it came the end of French leadership in Europe.
