The Supreme Court case on May 18th 1896 upheld the constitutionality of the idea during the time of segregation that is “separate but equal”. This stemmed from an incident in 1892 which an African American train passenger refused to sit in a Jim Crow car, breaking a Louisiana law. The Court ruled that a state's law applies only applying a “legal distinction” between black and white did not conflict with the 13th and 14th amendments. This Supreme Court case would spark many years of turmoil about discrimination against African Americans and the debate wouldn’t end until the Brown vs. Board of Education in 1954.
