The Panama Canal was built in order to create a passage across the Isthmus of Panama to link the Pacific and Atlantic ocean. The US purchased the canal zone for 40 billion dollars in 1902. President Roosevelt was the key person in starting the building process of the Panama canal. The Panama Canal helped the US economy by making trading and shipping a much faster and simpler process.
