Dred Scott was a Missouri slave who fought for the right to sue in a federal court for his freedom. He argued that he was a free man because he had been in the “free” Louisiana territory for four years therefore he was a free man. The Supreme Court Decision ruled that he could not sue because he was seen as property, not a citizen.
