2 янв 1000 г. - Oneota/Ioway site near CCCC

Описание:

Site from the emergence of Oneota society (Ioway ancestors) 5-10 mi from CCCC- 1000 c.e.

The Sweeting archaeological site was a settlement from the earliest generations of Oneota (Ioway ancestors) society. It had been a small hamlet situated next to a small creek 5 to 10 miles southwest of the CCCC property. The people whose home was there a millennium ago left behind several artifacts that represent interesting aspects of how they lived: projectile points, stone tools, post molds, shell-tempered pottery, fire pits, and corn remains. This hamlet would have been a permanent settlement, which means they probably lived houses made with walls of bark and mud—or reeds from the creek—rather than the skin-covered teepees that were used for campsites on hunting trips.

One characteristic of Oneota/Ioway communities was the set of trails that connected the homes in the village to the cropland and water. The river, lake, or creek upon which a community was situated was very important to day-to-day life. In addition to reeds for houses and basketry, villagers collected clam and mussel shells from the creeks or rivers, which they crushed into a powder used in their pottery. The people who lived in the Sweeting hamlet would have been from one of the earliest generations of corn farmers in Iowa, as Sweeting is one of the oldest sites in the state with evidence of corn.
