The Missouri Compromise took place in 1821 when Missouri was about to enter the union as a new state. There were disagreements whether or not Missouri should be a slave state or a free state. A compromise was made when Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Maine entered the union as a free state which kept the balance of free and slave states. The Missouri Compromise also stated that there would be no new states to enter the union as slave states if the state is north of the 36/30 line.
