The boat people fled from Vietnam by boat and ship after the Vietnam war. The word also refers to people who left Vietnam by any means through 1978 to the early 1990s by most people. Their first definitions were areas in Indochina, however they eventually ended up aiming for the United States. Their journey was very dangerous, with lots of things along the way that could kill them.
A mass amount of refugees coming to the U.S. was a big event after the war. Any amount of refugees that come to the U.S. affected its economy and how the population perceived the Vietnamese. It also shows how bad the Vietnamese government was.
