After the U.S. had left Vietnam, the NVA launched a small offensive to test the ARVN. Fearing their total annihilation, all ARVN fled back to Saigon. The north had control of all of the northern parts of south Vietnam in a matter of weeks. Saigon surrenders without a fight, which ends the war and the city is renamed to Ho Chi Minh city.
This event is important to the war because it ends the conflict between north and south Vietnam. It also showed that the north was ready to unify as soon as possible, because the U.S. was not gone long from the country when they launched their offensive.
