What: Harriet Beecher Stowe published this in response to the pro-slavery movement. Many northerners felt as if their eyes had been opened to the horrors of slavery. On the other hand, southerners protested that Stowe’s work was slanderous.

Led to War: Because of the controversial opinions on the book, sides were formed. Northerners agreed with the book and believed slavery was wrong, whereas the southerners thought that Stowe was making them out to be worse than they really were.
