facilitates public mobility and commercial activity but the primary function is a palace for prayer
4-iwan design (iwan= a vaulted space that opens on one side to a courtyard)
earth colored exterior- simplicity
interior is more complex w/ dome soffits (undersides) that have varried geometric designs
Maqarnas= traditional islamic cusped niches
