The government began a nationwide operation to tackle illegal immigration. The lack of formal immigration status of many of the Rohingya combined with the violent way in which the operation was implemented in Rakhine state caused 200,000 to flee to Bangladesh.
Most returned within a year due to pressure from the Bangladeshi government.
