During colonial times there was migration from Chittagong to Rakhine with the encouragement of the British administration. This created socio-economic problems and changed the ethnic and religious makeup of the state leading to considerable resentment from the Rakhine Buddhist Community. These tensions erupted into violence in WW2. The Rohingya remained faithful to the British whereas the Rakhine supported the Japanese, mainly as for the broader aim of independence.
