Sanitation is vital in preventing the spread of disease. One breakthrough in sanitation was that lister discovered that if you disinfect medical tools it will prevent the spread of disease.
Plumbing and sewage systems also play a big part in preventing disease. 1 in 3 people in the world do not have proper flushing toilets.
In Haiti after the earthquake of 2010, there was a massive cholera outbreak due to unsafe drinking water brought by UN officers from nepal. This proves that sanitation played a major role keeping people healthy.
The popularization of toilets in 1961 by Thomas Crapper was incredibly impactful in clean sanitation practices.
