Wu Zhao took control of the government in 690 (during the Tang Dynasty) and declared herself emperor. Many historians at the time reviled her, and lamented the growing influence of women in the court; however, more serious historians and neutral viewers of her time viewed her as an effective ruler, Wu Zhao condoned and promoted Buddhism during her rule.
