Ivan IV, Ivan the Terrible, came to the throne in 1533. He was only three years old at the time, and his young life was a large struggle for power. From 1547 to 1560 is usually called Ivan’s “good period.” During this time period Ivan won wars, expanded Russia’s borders, gave Russia a code of laws, and ruled fairly. He also had a “bad period” which led to a secret police force dressed in black. Ivan ordered that many innocent people get executed. Thousands of people died because of Ivan’s power frenzy.
