On April 25, 1846, a 2,000 man Mexican Cavalry attacked a 70 man US patrol under the command of Captain Seth Thorton, this provoked the Thorton Affair. After this US congress approved the declaration of war. The Mexican land gained from the American-Mexican War eventually led to the debate over slavery, one cause of the Civil War.
