The Louisiana Purchase doubled the United State's territory and was the beginning of the expansion west, and the start of manifest destiny. Our home state of South Dakota (which wasn't even a territory at the time) was a part of this purchase. At first, the U.S. only wanted to buy New Orleans and its ports, but once they saw how much more was offered they accepted the rest of the deal. Napoleon needed the funds to fuel his army and keep on trucking basically everybody. This purchase set the U.S. on its course to becomeing such a big country that it now is.
