Champlain's third voyage saw the first contact with the Wendat, who sought out a beneficial trade alliance with the French. This move solidified France as an ally of the Wendat, as well as the other tribes allied with them, which would help establish a proper formal alliance down the line. This also marked the French as enemies of the Mohawk and would shape later conflicts between the two throughout the following century.
This would also continue in a pattern of French forging relationships with Indigenous peoples for benefits and trade, a large advantage to them over the British in the early years of the fur trade.
