In 1848, Venice struck a revolutionary war against Austria, so Austria blockaded Venice so that they would starve. However, Austria couldn't get close enough to shoot them. So in 1849 a young Austrian artillery lieutenant named Franz von Uchatius came up with the idea of launching balloons carrying explosives over Venice. The first attempt, carried out on July 12, 1849, failed because the wind was not in Austria’s favor. Later, however in august, the balloon launch was successful. The way the bombed worked was that there was a timer that would drop the bomb, and upon falling, the bomb would have been lighted. Te bombs were somewhat useful, but Venice surrendered a few days later.
pros: the begging of unmanned aircraft was opened up to the world.
cons: this particular design was very risky because balloons depend on wind, and wind is very unpredictable and can change in a heartbeat.
