These icons of the nineteenth century are symbolic and emblematic of the changes that transformed New York and eventually the nation. The bridge, constructed between 1869-1883, was an engineering marvel of its day. Its use of steel foreshadowed American cities' future growth skyward. The Statue of lady Liberty, a Centennial gift from France, was inscribed with a motto of America's desire to receive the downcast immigrants of the world. Unfortunately it was a bit of an exaggeration of the reality.
